01 / THE STORY

WHERE THE
SOUND BEGINS.

Phuture's experiments with the Roland TB-303 reached Ron Hardy's Music Box floor before “Acid Tracks” appeared on record in 1987. DJ Pierre recalls how the group found the sound by exploring the machine.

The resonant, changing bassline spread through Chicago and into the UK's late-1980s club explosion. Its story has several precursors, but Phuture's record remains a defining moment.
