WHERE THE
SOUND BEGINS.

By 1988, Chicago producers and MCs including Tyree Cooper and Fast Eddie were placing rap vocals over house beats. Hip house grew from two scenes already sharing dance-floor space, records, and radio.

Its crossover moment widened the audience for house, while the records kept the punch and call-and-response of both traditions.
